Scenes from BEN-HUR (1959)
I already posted about special effects from BEN-HUR here at the blog. But those were the spectacular scenes. Here are two scenes with matte paintings for regular scenes showcasing the Jerusalem cityscape. Nice. Very believable. Matte artist: Matthew Yuricich.

The Lower scene showing the trial of Christ before Pilate is a direct copy of an illustration by the French 19th century artist James Tissot.
His illustrated Bible was extremely popular in America and many other of his paintings provided inspiration for set and costume designers.
