Excellent matte paintings from this spectacular film. The matte work is very subtle. Lou Litchtenfield was responsible for them. He was uncredited. Since the bulk of the movie takes place indoors, these two exterior shots are at the beginning and at the very end.

The upper photo is not a Matte painting. It's a set built for the movie.

I always enjoy watching this movie.
It is interesting from a historical point of view too given when the film was made and released only a year before the Suez crisis. The Egyptian troops in that opening sequence clearly march like modern British soldiers. In all probability the extras were probably British trained Egyptian soldiers.
It would also be interesting to find out what contemporary Egyptians thought about an English Actor playing a Pharaoh!
Despite the article I still have my doubts about the top image. The people are too well integrated into the scene and they pass right through the gate in the movie.
A shot can have multiple elements including full set (with actors) combined with matte paintings.
