Irene Sharaff took over as costume designer for Elizabeth Taylor when the production moved from London to Rome.

The original costumes designed by Oliver Messel had a much more accurate Greco-Roman look.

However the costumes by Sharaff became iconic along with the make up and hairstyles.

The Roman military costumes in the movie were designed by Vittorio Nino Novarese and the Roman legionary armour and equipment was as good as anything on display in a museum at that time.

I've seen photos of the Oliver Messel costumes and they are not nearly as attractive as those Irene Sharaff designed.

Plus to the film makers and audience they don't look Egyptian either!

So Historical accuracy lost out again.
