A scene from THE GREATEST STORY EVER TOLD (1965)
Whatever one thinks of this movie, one can't deny how it is filled with amazing matte paintings, some of the best I've ever seen. Here's just one example. Below: you see the set built and above, you see what was added with a matte painting. It looks real to me. The movie had a small crew of painters, including Matthew Yuricich, Albert Simpson and Jan Domela.

Pretty impressive!
One of the few movies which actually shows Roman soldiers marching on a proper looking Roman road.
Clearly someone on the research team had also read Josephus, which describes how the Romans match six abreast.
Military costumes were designed by Vittorio Nino Novarese who was very good in terms of accuracy.
I have a helmet and leather tunic from this film, which are in good condition in spite of their age.
