Turhan Bey and Maria Montez in SUDAN (1945)
A colourful adventure/romance movie that's rarely shown anywhere these days. Like all Maria Montez movies of the 1940s, it's an over-the-top colourful adventure. Not as over-the-top as COBRA WOMAN (1944) but it's a close second. The Maria Montez - Jon Hall - Sabu - Turhan Bey movies of the 1940s were very popular (Sabu is not in this movie). Today, they evoke a time that's long gone. I'll have a full review of this soon.
Look at Maria's expression.
ReplyDeleteAn enjoyable fantasy flick. Maria Montez - who never learned to speak English without a noticeable accent - was the "Queen of Technicolor" in the first half of the 1940s.
This film is a classic example of the "scimitar-and-sand" genre. Too bad Hollywood does not dare make such films these days due to concerns regarding ethnic stereotyping (slavery, harems, and Islam).
'40's women's hairstyles were really weird.
ReplyDeleteAlthough the other Maria Montez/Jon Hall films are available on DVD, Sudan and White Savage have never been released on any form of home media. The entire series is colorful and entertaining and Sudan has always been one of my favorites. I have photos from it with the title Queen of the Nile.
ReplyDeleteYes, it's very entertaining.
ReplyDelete'I have photos from it with the title Queen of the Nile.'
Thanks for the info.
Actually I have it on a fairly decent DVD under the title SUDAN. However, it may no longer be available, as I got this DVD a number of years ago.
