THE FALL OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE is a big disappointment in my view.
It is much too long, has problems with pacing, and is quite misleading historically.
The Emperor Commodus was certainly a very bad ruler. However the Empire recovered during the third century. It actually reached its greatest extent under Diocletian due to his highly profitable conquest of what is now Romania.
The Empire did not finally collapse until 476 A.D. It was nevertheless greatly weakened by numerous barbarian invasions during much of the fourth century.
I disagree completely. I think it is one of the best epic films ever made. It's memorable on every level, not the least of which is Anthony Mann's wonderful direction.
I really like this movie. The spectacle is huge. battles well done and the sets were magnificent. Great actors and a cast of thousands of real people. The history of course was actually changed which is normal for Hollywood Commodus was poisoned. Oh yes the musical score is one of best ever.

I was wrong about Diocletian being the Emperor who conquered what is now Romania. It was Trajan, and his column in Rome depicts his military success.
