Gordon Scott in HERCULES & THE PRINCESS OF TROY (1965)
This TV pilot is one of the most popular videos at PEPLUM TV. It's nice that people have discovered it. There are probably more people who have seen it now than when it was show originally on TV (thinks about it). ABC didn't pick up the series, which is a shame because one can speculate on all the things and storyline they could have done. It would have been cool. But the PEPLUM craze was pretty much dead by 1965. Had the TV pilot been made in 1962 or 63, the series might have been green lighted. Oh well...
ReplyDeleteThis pilot has one of the best monsters in the entire Peplum genre.
I seem to remember that "Castle of Frankenstein" magazine ran the usual pictures, but also listed the U.S. T.V.network, maybe ABC, day of the week and time the series would play on during the, back then, upcoming fall TV season. Don't think it was a case of the show being picked up then canceled before it aired as it was someone being overly optimistic in their press release.
ReplyDeleteI remember watching this on our black and white TV when it was on ABC. I think that it still would of made a great series, and since the Peplum movies were still being shown on TV. One of my channels had Spectacular Theater on every week in an early evening time period on Saturdays. The whole family always watched it. The theme music to the show was from Ben-Hur and had clips from different PEPs. at the start and after the movie. When all these PEPs were shown at the local theater it was always full.
ReplyDeleteOrsh549, thanks for the info. The genre died by then (in Europe) but I guess there was some lag in regards to the US.
ReplyDeleteStephen, I posted the CASTLE OF FRANKENSTEIN magazine here at the blog
Yes, the monster was great.
