The film has little to do with the 1940 movie other than the title. It is closer to the Fairbanks version and very good. To say the others are "clearly superior" is selling the merits of the 1961 version short. It was Reeves personal favorite among his films and is certainly an entertaining movie. A real pity that a proper DVD release has never surfaced. All the foreign language ones are the incorrect aspect ratio and have faded color.
This is an enjoyable Peplum, but its tone is not sufficiently dark and serious.
ReplyDeleteBoth the 1924 and 1940 treatments of this material are clearly superior.
