The demise of Proteus in HERCULES & THE CAPTIVE WOMEN (1961)
I really like this monster in the movie. The detailing, as seen in this clear image, is excellent. The eye and scaling still look good by today's standards. One of my favourite PEPLUM films, unjustifiably maligned by haters.
The fight between Hercules and Proteus is one of my fave moments in Peplum history. It's very inventive and dynamic, including the startling image of Ismene stuck in the rock. The look of the lizard monster seems to be based on an iguana, which is why it's so effective. Making a movie monster "work" is all about an agreement between the filmmaker and that part of our brain that suspends disbelief. If the monster has parts of its anatomy that our brain will recognize, like skin texture, bone structure, etc, we are quicker to accept the creature as a living thing.
ReplyDeleteI agree. The whole scene is surreal brilliance!
