Rome seen in THE ROBE (1953)
A matte painting with only the shimmering water and people walking about at the far right being real elements. A nice image but they could have added a few people traipsing about to give it more realism. This scene lasts just a few seconds. A lot of work for a brief moment.
Very good comment.
ReplyDeleteThe near total absence of people moving around is really bizarre for what is supposed to be a major port during working hours.
Yes, you are right, but the good thing with these movies is that when you know their tricks, you are not only amazed with the creativity of those who made them, but you love more these movies and their stories because of the effort done. On the contrary, CGI effects in modern films, are the most boring and disappointing experience you can live even before seeing them.
ReplyDeleteFilm is a very curious medium. Today you can create almost perfect representations of reality in a movie, but I don't want that. I want my films to be imperfect representations of reality. Film is not reality; that is not the point of this art form. If you don't like the brush strokes of color in a oil painting, take a photograph instead. Ray Harryhausen summed it all up perfectly: "If you make things to real, sometimes your bring it down to the mundane."
