Fay Spain is dwarfed by the huge Atlantis set in HERCULES & THE CAPTIVE WOMEN (1961)
One of the biggest sets PEPLUM sets ever built. It's quite impressive, certainly the statue of Uranus, which breaks apart during this scene. This set alone sets this film apart from other PEPLUM films, made in Hollywood or Europe.
It's an extremely impressive set. I think this whole film is lavish and beautiful-looking, and it's one of my top favorites in the genre.

ReplyDeleteBesides the magnificent sets (which remind me of an ancient version of a Bond super villain lair) there are a couple of other stand outs starting around the 01:27:32 mark:
- chariot with probably takes the record for the most horsepower - two rows of SIX - a total of 12 horses!
- actually driving it through narrow poorly lit tunnels while being chased by a bunch of soldiers on horseback
- setting the chariot on fire and sending it back into the persuing horsemen
MAYHEM!
