Carroll's character, Nydia, is blind. She's central to the story and she is basically its heart and soul. She's also one of the main characters of the novel by baron Edward Bulwer-Lytton. This adaptation, like so many others based on the novel, was more 'inspired' by the book than an actual accurate adaptation.

The novel is virtually unreadable - at least for most modern readers - due to its stilted language, length, and religiosity.
