By the Gods!

Ombretta Colli and kirk Morris in TERROR OF THE STEPPES

One of many PEPLUM films set in Central Asia. Kirk played them all. Fun film.

Behind-the-Scenes

Pietro Francisci directs a scene from HERCULES (1958) with Sylva Koscina and Steve Reeves lying down unconscious. I love these behind-the-scenes photos from that classic film.

By the Gods!

Lex Barker is CAPTAIN FALCON

The film was also released under a Robin Hood title in the US and Germany. I'm still wondering what Lex is wearing there. These costumes also shows the difference between Italian and English sensibilities. I don't recall men wearing shorts in any English productions set in that period.

US half sheet for HERCULES (1983)

This print is from a Canadian release or to be more precise from Ontario. It's incredible that this cheesy film was rated 14+.

By the Gods!

Alan Steel, as Commodus, shows who's the master of gladiatorial action in THE REBEL GLADIATOR

This scene happens at the beginning of the film. Great PEPLUM and one of Alan's best roles.

I'm taking some time off so see ya soon!

PEPLUM GIF Animation : SON OF SPARTACUS

Steve Reeves swings into action in SON OF SPARTACUS, also starring Gianna Maria Canale, Ombretta Colli, Jacques Sernas and all (Giovanni Cianfriglia as stuntman too)

By the Gods!

Steve Reeves, as Aeneas, shows his might in THE TROJAN HORSE

Aeneas wasn't a 'superhero' but what's a Steve Reeves film without a scene showcasing his strength? Great film.

By the Gods!

Claudette Colbert is CLEOPATRA (1934)

Dramatic photo. This happens at the very start of the film which is a great way to start the film but story wise the film could have been a bit more dramatic and the ending is unsatisfying even though production is top notch.

Beautiful!  Perfectly captures the film.

By the Gods!

Rory Calhoun (second from left) and Gianna Maria Canale (lady on the right) star in THE TREASURE OF MONTE CRISTO (1961)

Watching this film you sorta wonder for whom it was made for: it's too low key for kids and too pulpy for adults. The interesting thing about this small film is the fact that Gianna speaks wonderful English in it. Someone uploaded the film on Youtube.

Slave girls are whipped into submission with a whipper in THE LOST WORLD OF SINBAD

A PEPLUM made in Japan, including obligatory dance number. The whipper's costume is even more tiny than those in Italian films. The film rarely plays anywhere around these part. It's very colourful and over-the-top as per Japanese cinema.

Clare (Judi Bowker) meets Francesco (St-Francis ; Graham Faulkner) for the first time in BROTHER SUN, SISTER MOON

Franco Zeffirelli directed this lush production. They don't make films like this anymore. I hope you had a nice Easter weekend for those who celebrate the holiday.

By the Gods!

Fabiola (Michèle Morgan) and Rhual (Henri Vidal) meet in a garden at night in FABIOLA

One of the more poetic moments of the PEPLUM genre. Michèle is still alive (!) but Henri died tragically young (link to TRAGIC STARS).

Rik Battaglia, RIP

Sad news to report that versatile PEPLUM actor Rik Battaglia died last Friday. He was 88. Rik appeared in many PEPLUM films and here are just a small sample of his many roles. Rik was the lead star of many films but he often played supporting roles. The good looking actor was, back in the day, an Italian heartthrob and he had his fair share of beefcake moments. I really like Rik. Sniff. RIP!

Moira Orfei invokes the goddess Ishtar in HERO OF BABYLON

"Oh divine and powerful goddess of fire!"

The Dovekeepers on CBS

Sam Neil confers with Cote de Pablo and Rachel Brosnahan in THE DOVEKEEPERS

I tried (yes, tried) watching this mini-series on CBS last night and I couldn't make it more than 30 minutes into it. Last night was part 1 and tonight is part 2. Really bland and at times cheesy. Oh well...
