A lot of folks out there have been propagating a myth that Steve Reeves' voice was high pitched and not very masculine since his voice was always dubbed in his Italian productions. What they don't know is that was common practice back then: post production dubbing was mostly the norm in those days in Italy. And even though Steve appeared in two films made in the US, ATHENA and JAIL BAIT, where one can hear his real voice, the myth continued on existing. Here's another example of his real voice, from a TV show, the BURNS AND ALLEN sitcom, where Steve appears at the 14:00 mark and he definitely doesn't have a high pitched voice.
I didn't upload this episode.
I still think that the director of Hercules was daft to have had Steve lose 10 pounds of muscle for his part in Hercules. He looks excellent here. Although, now that I think of it, the guy who was his stand-in wasn't quite as big, so perhaps Steve's "diet" was to make their appearances more closely match. Just a hunch.
ReplyDeleteI always wondered why Steve didn't do his own voice when these movies were being dubbed, especially in English. Some of his movies the actor that dubbed his voice came pretty close.
ReplyDeleteSteve sounds good, but the guy who dubbed Herc voice has an amazing voice. I think it is better than steves. Steve also needs to work on his diction
