With the release of the new THE LEGEND OF HERCULES starring Kellan Lutz critics have been having a field not only trashing that film (maybe for good reasons) but also trashing the PEPLUM genre and mostly the old Steve Reeves/Sword and Sandal films. I really hate this. Here are just a few examples I came across:

Critics be damned! This genre has enough of a strong following to ensure that it will continue to survive through the years.Productions may not always be top-notch but the formula of muscular heroes saving buxom beauties from the clutches of monsters and villains amid the clashing of steel on steel will always have some appeal to movie-lovers.Just in case though,I make sure that my guests are strapped securely to their chairs so they won't escape a tenth viewing of"The Three Stooges Meet Hercules"
Let's face-it critics are "pampered JERKS". They have cut down many great movies over the years, and a lot of those movies plus the PEPLUMS made TONS OF MONEY. One such debacle by them was how they bashed STAR WARS, well the rest is HISTORY!!
I just saw it today, January 13, 2014 here in the Philippines. What can I say on the actors' acting abilities? WOODEN... NO LIFE... As usual, the antagonist again would like to marry the lady of the Hercules. What do you expect Hercules will do? Save her? Of course. Even from the start, I already know the ending. Why is it that MOST (if not ALL)of the sword and sandal films since time immemorial (from 1956 up to now) must the heroes are obligated to make an inspirational speech before going to battle. Even Mel Gibson (Braveheart) did that. By the way, I'm sorry but even the president of the United States (Independence Day film) also has his speech before launching their attack on the aliens. Just asking. Going back to Hercules, no wonder it's a flop...
