Moses (Theodore Roberts) tells his people to march on in THE TEN COMMANDMENTS (1923)

Why are silent films so spectacular? There's no scene in the 1956 remake which equals with this one. Cast of thousands!

  1. Part of it was that America was so "movie crazy" in the 20's. Everyone wanted to be in The Movies, so extras were a dime-a-dozen.

Also, the extras had no union to protect them from studio abuse & over-work, but they would eventually in the 50's.

  2. The Exodus portion of this silent film is much more interesting than the "modern" portion, with the elderly mother constantly going around thumping her Bible. I have a feeling that even the Pope would've told her to "lighten up". Still, it WAS cool when the church collapsed on her. lol.
