Pharaoh Khufu (Jack Hawkinds) is helped by the young Senta (Dewey Martin) through the treacherous maze-like corridors of a pyramid in LAND OF THE PHARAOHS
Not too keen with the Joan Collins storyline which dominates the script but I do love the many scenes with the deathtraps throughout the pyramid. Really ingeniously designed stuff.
I think that the movie was a little heavy handed with Joan's storyline. This could of really been a huge epic, and Hawks should of handled it better. Great scenes with the building of the Pyramid and all the traps etc. The soundtrack like I've said before is outstanding.
ReplyDeleteIt looks marvellous now on high definition widescreen television. It is almost a masterclass on pyramid building. Hawkins is ideal as the pharoah with that authorative manner of his (like he was ideal too as Quintus Arrius in Ben Hur) and Joan as Nellifer is a hoot with that ruby in her navel. That closing sequence is still terrific ....
ReplyDeleteWasn't this Dewey Martin's first movie?
ReplyDeleteShades of Mister Garrison on 'South Park' -- I had an 8th grade history teacher who actually "taught" us that when Ancient Egyptian queens were "naughty" they were buried alive in their husband's tomb! Art imitating life even further, this teacher was bald just like Mister Garrison.
