PEPLUMOUS (!) painting by Ludwig Thiersch called ALARIC IN ATHENS
As I mentioned yesterday, August 24 is the date of the Sack of Rome by the Visigoths led by Alaric but Alaric didn't just conquer Rome, he also conquered Athens and this painting illustrates it with panache.
