According to a Jean Simmons interview: Edmund Purdom replaced Marlon [Brando] and he couldn’t bring any conviction to the script. Then when Michael Wilding walked out with that huge headdress Peter Ustinov said he looked like a gigantic salt shaker and we all dissolved in laughter.

I think Ed is great in this. He played his role to understated perfection. Marlon would have overacted the whole thing.
