Esther Williams, George Sanders and all in JUPITER'S DARLING
A big flop for MGM; sorta not surprising. I mean unless it's an all and out spoof, the idea of a romantic musical comedy with Hannibal is a bit misconceived, no matter how well mounted the film was, certainly the underwater scene with the statues coming to life as Esther swims about in a *big* pool.

I thought that this movie was a joke. I saw it on TCM a couple of years ago and almost cried. Singing Hannibal and so on. Would of been better served if Abbot & Costello would of made it, or Martin and Lewis.
Aha...It's sorta like Springtime for Hitler.
I think the problem with it was, it was an ill-concieved project from the start. It was an epic romantic comedy musical. And it kind of moved in all of those directions at once. The plot was not tight. There WAS a nice chemistry between Esther Williams and Howard Keel, and if they'd focussed on that, made it the centerpiece, they might have had a fine movie. But they had the dancing elephants, Marge and Gower champion, the obligatory swimming scene for Esther, etc. etc. etc. A shame, they wasted a lot of talent.
