The film shot for several weeks in Rome under the direction of John Huston, with Arthur Hornblow as producer, until MGM's executives, dissatisfied with Huston's approach and the script, shut down production, re-cast, ordered a new script written and handed the whole film to Sam Zimbalist and Mervyn LeRoy.
