Before they were PEPLUM stars: Bud Spencer

Bud Spencer, aka Carlo Pedersoli, was the first Italian to swim the 100 m freestyle in less than one minute. He achieved this on 19 September 1950. Spencer participated in the 1952 Olympic Games in Helsinki, Finland, reaching the semi-finals in the 100 m freestyle (wikipedia).

Spencer would have a brief cameo in QUO VADIS in 1951 and one of his first speaking roles in HANNIBAL (last photo). Amazing how Bud would turn out. Arf.

Bud Spencer became a very popular actor in Europe. Terrance Hill had a big part in HANNIBAL, which not being a great film was I think a huge box office hit. I remember seeing this when it was released and the show I went to see this the theater was packed! (600 seats filled) I think that Victor Mature had a lot to do with that. Hill and Spencer were great as a team so much so that there were pair of lookalikes that made some fun euro films in late 70's.
