As someone who reads comics from time time, I have to admit that the concept of
Hercules in modern times is not very appealing to me so I never checked it out

What I've seen has actually pretty good, especially the stuff by Greg Pak. They have flashbacks sometimes to more historical mythological stuff too. It is no more incongruous than the peplums set in later times.
The current run has Hercules, temporarily deprived of his superstrength, fighting evil armed with all the mystical weapons he's aquirred (like the pelt of the Nemeadian Lion and the shield of Medusa). It actually makes him even MORE deadly!
Further on the theme of Hercules in comics, here is a link to a complete story of the 1952/53 Pilipino Komiks series HERCULES in which Hercules goes to meet Atlas to discover the whereabouts of the Garden of the Hesperides:
